(1)  No on Prop 39

In the General Election on November 3, 2026, Prop 39 is a ballot measure that, if passed, would require voters to show government-issued ID every time they vote — creating privacy risks, barriers for eligible voters, ballot rejections, and targeting communities that already face obstacles to voting. Mandatory citizenship checks using flawed databases would lead to purges of eligible voters from the rolls.  All this to solve a “problem” that does not exist.

You can help defeat this voter suppression ballot measure by taking different actions.

  • Join an ACLU-NorCal text bank.  There are about 20 text banks in September and October.  Click here to see a list of days, times, and to sign up. All text banks will be held virtually over Zoom. A computer is recommended but texting can also be done on a tablet or phone. Your personal phone number is never shared as it all happens via your web browser.  One or two days before the text bank, you will receive instructions on how to set up an account on GetThru (the texting platform) if you have not texted with ACLU-NorCal before.  Training will be provided at the beginning of the text bank via Zoom.  The Zoom session will be active for the entire duration of the text bank so that participants can ask questions and get technical help.
  • If you know of any local organizations and community organizations that support voting rights, ask the leaders of those organizations to endorse the “No on Prop 39” campaign: ENDORSE the Campaign to Defeat Prop 39!
  • If you know any persons in the CVAP (Citizen Voting Age Population), let them know of the harms of Prop 39 and ask them to vote “no”.

(2) Non-partisan poll monitoring (poll observing) on November 3, 2026

California Common Cause, Asian Law Caucus, and the Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area are co-organizing non-partisan poll monitoring (poll observing) efforts in Northen California, Southern California, and Central Valley on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, 2026.  Our chapter encourages you to join their effort.

They will provide the training, tools, and support that you need to get started quickly. As a volunteer, you’ll help voters:

  • Navigate confusing or changing voting rules
  • Access language assistance and disability accommodations
  • Get real-time support when issues arise
  • Push back against misinformation and intimidation

(3) Distribute Know Your Rights (KYR) wallet-sized cards to your own personal, professional, academic, or social networks.

There are 3 types of cards in terms of subject matters:  immigrants' rights (interaction with ICE), interaction with police, right to demonstrate/protest.  Each card has 2 language versions: English, Spanish.  (Know Your Rights about interaction with ICE also has a version in Simplified Chinese.)

(4)  Monitor or screen agendas of selected government meetings to see if there is any agenda item that implicates civil liberties, and report the findings to chapter leaders.  This is a weekly activity that takes about one hour per week.  Training will be provided.

(5)  Alert us of any upcoming community events that may be of interest to ACLU, e.g. tabling opportunities, speaking engagements.

(6)  Sign various petitions listed in the "Take Action" page to urge your State Senator or Assemblymember to vote on ACLU's priority bills according to ACLU's position.
