Current or ongoing opportunities
Please contact us by using the form found in https://acluscc.org/contact/ to learn more about any of these opportunities.
(1) Distribute Know Your Rights (KYR) wallet-sized cards to your own personal, professional, academic, or social networks.
There are 3 types of cards in terms of subject matters: immigrants' rights (interaction with ICE), interaction with police, right to demonstrate/protest. Each card has 2 language versions: English, Spanish. (Know Your Rights about interaction with ICE also has a version in Simplified Chinese.)
If you need only a small amount (about 20 or so) of KYR cards, you can contact our chapter by using the form https://acluscc.org/contact/.
For bulk order, please use the ACLU NorCal Material Request Form.
(2) Monitor or screen agendas of selected government meetings to see if there is any agenda item that implicates civil liberties, and report the findings to chapter leaders. This is a weekly activity that takes about one hour per week. Training will be provided.
(3) Alert us of any upcoming community events that may be of interest to ACLU, e.g. tabling opportunities, speaking engagements.
(4) Sign various petitions listed in the "Take Action" page to urge your State Senator or Assemblymember to vote on ACLU's priority bills according to ACLU's position.
(4) Click here to apply to become a chapter leader.
Upcoming events and opportunities
(1) March 2026: AB 495 school policy monitoring (extension of research of AB 699 compliance). Due to new state law, i.e. AB 495 of year 2025, the California Attorney General updated the model policies by December 1, 2025. This is an incremental update. School districts have to update their policies and post the "Know Your Educational Rights" checklist by March 1, 2026. This volunteer activity involves Web based research on school districts' adopted policies and school districts' Web pages to verify compliance with state law. Training was provided on March 12. If you are interested in this activity but missed the training session, please contact us to make special arrangements.
(2) Summer recess lobbying: This will take place from July 3 to July 31. Please stay tuned for more information.
