Current or ongoing opportunities

Please contact us by using the form found in https://acluscc.org/contact/ to learn more about any of these opportunities.

(1) Distribute Know Your Rights wallet-sized cards to your own personal, professional, academic, or social networks.

There are 3 types of cards in terms of subject matters:  immigrants' rights (interaction with ICE), interaction with police, right to demonstrate/protest.

Each card has 2 language versions: English, Spanish.  (Know Your Rights about interaction with ICE also has a version in Simplified Chinese.)

(2)  Monitor or screen agendas of selected government meetings to see if there is any agenda item that implicates civil liberties, and report the findings to chapter leaders.  This is a weekly activity that takes about one hour per week.  Training will be provided.

(3) Alert us of any upcoming community events that may be of interest to ACLU, e.g. tabling opportunities, speaking engagements.

(4) Click here to apply to become a chapter leader.

Upcoming events and opportunities

(1) Feb 7, 2026 in San JoseACLU-NorCal Organizing Convenings

(2) Starting Feb 2026:  This is the beginning of the legislative season in California.  Use the links in https://aclucalaction.org/take-action/ to send messages to your state legislators about some specific bills. (Note: Feb 20, 2026 is the last day for bills to be introduced.)

(3) March 2026: AB 495 school policy monitoring (extension of research of AB 699 compliance). Due to new state law, i.e. AB 495 of year 2025, the California Attorney General updated the model policies by December 1, 2025.  This is an incremental update.  School districts have to update their policies by March 1, 2026.  The volunteer activity involves Web based research on school districts' adopted policies to verify compliance with state law.  Training will be provided.  If you are interested in this activity, please subscribe to our chapter's mailing list.  We will send you information when we are ready to launch this activity.

(4) April 2026, summer 2026: Participate in ACLU-organized lobby visits with your legislators in the California legislature, i.e.  Assemblymembers and State Senators. These typically take place in April and in July/August.  The lobby visits in April may be virtual or may be in Sacramento.  The event in the summer consists of in-district lobby visits.  If you are interested in this activity, please subscribe to ACLU-NorCal's mailing list.
